In Christian discussions about sexuality and gender today, one major recurring theme has to do with the livability of long-term singleness and celibacy. What challenges do celibate LGBTQ and same-sex attracted folks typically face in terms of mental health, and how do these challenges compare to the challenges of their peers (whether LGBTQ peers in same-sex marriages, LGBTQ peers in mixed-orientation marriages, or straight peers both married and unmarried)? In this webinar, we’ll hear from Dr. Karen Herzel about the findings of her dissertation, “Perceived Mental Health Protective Factors of Celibate Gay Christians.” Dr. Herzel will share what she’s learned in her research about how celibate gay Christians navigate their commitments to celibacy, and how others, including the Christian church community, can support their personhood, commitments, and mental health.
