Navigating gender identity concerns in therapy always requires great care, regardless of a client’s age. But when the client is a minor—especially before they’ve completed puberty—additional layers of care come into play. How do typical care models for adult clients apply when working with a young person navigating gender identity, and how do these care models need to be modified for minors? How can clinicians balance therapeutic priorities when a young client’s own stated goals for therapy don’t match a parent’s or legal guardian’s goals? How do clients’ faith convictions factor into these cinical spaces? What does the latest mental health research have to say about best practices, potential missteps, and realistic goals for therapy with transgender and gender dysphoric young people? Our guide in this conversation will be psychologist Mark Yarhouse, who directs Wheaton College’s Sexual and Gender Identity Institute.
